Breathe underwater. Respect the pressure.
Scuba lets you breathe from a cylinder of compressed air. Every 10 metres of seawater adds another atmosphere of pressure: it squeezes the air in your ears, mask, lungs and jacket, and pushes extra nitrogen into your body. Nearly every rule in diving comes from that one fact.
- +1 bar
- Pressure for every 10 m of seawater
- 18 m
- Depth limit of an Open Water certification
- 3 min
- Safety stop at 5 m before you surface

Take the diver down. Watch the air squeeze, the colours drain away and the no-stop time shrink. This is why you equalise early and ascend slowly.

A 12 L cylinder breathed at a relaxed rate lasts about 60 min here before you reach a 50 bar reserve. Shallow: where everyone starts.
